In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the approval of two community improvement projects (CIPs) aimed at enhancing local parks. The projects, which will be executed by KER Construction, involve significant upgrades to Sunshine Drive Park and Donaldson Park, both located within half a mile of each other.
Sunshine Drive Park will see the addition of a small playground with a pour-in play surface, a half basketball court, a recycled rubber walking path, and outdoor exercise equipment. Meanwhile, Donaldson Park will feature a kayak and canoe launch into the canal, outdoor exercise equipment, and a shade canopy with tables for community use.
Commissioner Rydell raised concerns regarding the bidding process, noting that KER's bid was over 30% lower than other qualified bids. He sought clarification on the vetting process to ensure the pricing was legitimate. The project manager assured the commissioners that KER's pricing aligned with the consultant's estimates and that the company was fully capable of delivering the project within the proposed budget.
KER Construction's president, Issa Rahaman, explained that the lower bid was possible because much of the work would be self-performed by local employees, which reduced overhead costs. He expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and the opportunity for local workers to contribute to improvements in their neighborhoods.
The commissioners expressed their support for the project and urged for a swift start to capitalize on favorable pricing for materials. The meeting concluded with a commitment to move forward promptly, ensuring that the enhancements to the parks will soon benefit the community.
