The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, specifically the Elmwood Park Patterson Elks, is taking significant steps to address the alarming rates of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and sleep-related accidents, which are the leading causes of death for infants aged 1 to 12 months. In recognition of October as SIDS Awareness Month, the organization has launched a project aimed at reducing these tragic incidents through the distribution of safe sleep boxes within their community.
These safe sleep boxes are equipped with essential items that promote safe sleeping practices, including swaddles, sleep sacks, pacifiers, and educational materials designed to inform parents about safe sleep environments. In addition to the distribution of these boxes, the Elks are also offering valuable resources such as infant CPR classes and safe sleep instruction. Recently, an infant CPR class was held on October 15, and plans are underway for a car seat safety class in November, in collaboration with the local police department, as well as a safe sleep class scheduled for December 6.
This initiative has been made possible through an impact grant awarded to Lodge 60 by their Grand Lodge, which is the largest grant offered by the organization. Out of 220 letters of intent submitted, only nine were awarded grants, highlighting the significance of this achievement for the Elks.
As part of their commitment to community welfare, the Elks will present ten safe sleep boxes to the resident assistant program, aimed at supporting expectant parents and those in need. The organization emphasizes that \"serving little lives is a big deal,\" and they hope to make a lasting positive impact through their efforts.
