Mental health services expand in Albany County amid rising demand

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the significant role of the Rehabilitation Support Services (RSS) in providing mental health support in Albany County. With a substantial presence in the Hudson Valley, RSS is recognized as one of the largest mental health providers in the area, offering a comprehensive range of services including housing, case management, and treatment.

Officials noted that there are over 800 mental health housing units in Albany County, with RSS managing a considerable portion of these. The discussion highlighted the varying levels of care available, which cater to both local residents and individuals from surrounding counties. While some programs attract participants from outside Albany County, officials clarified that this is not a predominant trend. They emphasized that Albany County houses a state psychiatric center that serves nine counties, often necessitating temporary supportive stays for patients before they return to their home counties.

The meeting also addressed the renewal of a contract for reentry services with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. This program, which has been in operation for nearly two decades, aims to support individuals transitioning back into the community after incarceration. Officials expressed pride in the ongoing reentry work, underscoring its importance in the broader context of mental health and community support services.
