Chautauqua County legislators convened recently to discuss the successful adoption of the 2025 budget, with a vote resulting in 14 in favor and 5 against. The meeting, chaired by Chairman Schagnon, highlighted the collaborative efforts of county employees in achieving this financial milestone.
During the session, public comments were invited, leading to a significant address from James Linden of Fredonia. Linden raised concerns regarding a contract with the North County Water District, claiming it was potentially fraudulent due to its failure to provide mutual benefits. He urged the legislature to hold the committee accountable for the contract, emphasizing that it currently serves only the North County Water District's interests.
Linden also criticized the handling of funds related to the budget, stating that over $5.5 million had not been repaid to the general fund as required, which could have alleviated financial pressures on local communities.
In lighter announcements, Legislator Vanstrom invited the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new playground in Lucille Ball Memorial Park, scheduled for the following day. Legislator Nebo reassured attendees that the North County Water District continues to make interest payments to the county, ensuring no financial loss for the county.
The meeting underscored both the achievements in budget management and ongoing concerns regarding local contracts and financial accountability.
