In a recent government meeting, officials awarded a significant contract for construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services related to the Aliko Road Connector project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at improving traffic flow in Lee County. The contract, valued at just under $35 million, was awarded to AECOM, which will oversee the construction activities for the entire $386 million project.
Rob Price from the Department of Transportation (DOT) presented the details, highlighting that the project will begin with phase one, which involves widening the existing two-lane Aliko Road from Airport Hall Road East to Green Meadow. The public notice for the necessary Army Corps permit has been received, and officials anticipate going to bid for this phase after the new year, with construction expected to commence by next summer.

Subscribe for Free The Aliko Road Connector is seen as a crucial development for alleviating traffic congestion in the region, particularly on Colonial Boulevard and Daniels Parkway. Local officials expressed optimism about the project's potential to enhance connectivity between East Lee County and South Lee County, as well as Collier County.
During the discussion, concerns were raised regarding the speed limit on the newly constructed sections of the road. Currently, the speed limit is set at 45 miles per hour, which some community members find confusing given the road's capacity for higher speeds. Officials acknowledged the challenges posed by the speed limit and the need for ongoing communication with law enforcement to manage traffic effectively.
Additionally, questions arose about the bidding process, as the project had only received one bid in two attempts. Price reassured the commissioners that the negotiated contract amount falls within the typical range for such projects, estimating that CEI costs usually account for 12 to 18 percent of the total construction cost. He emphasized that the contract is structured as a not-to-exceed amount, ensuring that any additional costs would require board approval.
The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude towards the staff for their transparency and responsiveness throughout the project planning process. Officials reiterated the importance of expediting the project to address the community's pressing traffic concerns, with hopes that the Aliko Road Connector will significantly improve transportation in the area.
